In addition to offering more power, comfort, fuel capacity and lower maintenance costs, with the exception of its tiny TFT display the Yamaha is the better bike and value for sport riding, touring and everything in between. Before I left, however, we needed to address some minor touring shortcomings and prepare the bike for its adventure. There are still quite a few 2019 Tracers out there at a very good price point.It’s hard to leave the BMW brand after riding them over 700000 miles even after reading the comparo where yamaha apparently edged out the 900. No other dealer has offered me this option so I’m definitely going for the GT…also it’s one of the few Japanese bikes I genuinely love the look of. The $8,995 F 900 R is the naked/sport roadster, and for an additional $2,700 the F 900 XR adds a semi-fairing with a windscreen and lowers, a taller, wider handlebar, more suspension travel and ground clearance, and lower footpegs.
Passengers also liked it better for two-up riding, since the seat is softer and roomier than the BMW’s and its grab rails are an easier reach.The BMW earns the adventure part of its sport-adventure description because it has nearly 7 inches of suspension travel front and rear and ample ground clearance, but with 17-inch wheels at each end I’d keep it well away from the dirt and just enjoy the extra travel on bumpy roads. Perfect commuter setup.The difference between filling up with 91 vs 87 is less than a dollar per fill up. The Tracer 900 motor has so much more character than the XR so it was an easy decision for me for that fact and of course cost. Yamaha motorcycles are made, sold and loved around the world.

Both offer impressive grunt for slicing through corners without much shifting, accelerating hard from a stop or picking off a slow-moving car or truck with a quick pass. I know the grey fairings and blurple wheels mirror the high-end R1 colour scheme so = premium. Get an accessory trunk to stow riding suit and helmet goes in one of the bags.
But the two bikes are pretty closely matched in the torque department where it really matters for day-in, day-out sport touring and commuting. I always put 87 in bikes that only require regular, but won’t let the need for premium be a deterrent to purchasing a particular bike. Holding back my purhase because of this. That’s good news that for a.mountian of money one can get a different set up. The 2020 color is slightly better but come on Yamaha give us that Phantom Blue in the US and I will buy one tomorrow. Good suspension calibration on both bikes matches them up quite closely in corners. Otherwise, though, our kitted-out Tracer turned out to be a solid sport-touring machine that inspires me to wonder: where shall I go next? As on the BMW, throttle-by-wire enables electronic features like three riding modes and dual-mode traction control, and the Yamaha’s TBW has been refined several times over the years to smoothen throttle response.
