I'm a guy and I loved this movie! Brilliantly acted funny plot even more relevant with online dating now. 3? The truth about The Truth About Cats & Dogs is that it's just not up to an awful lot. But she has worked on just 12 films since 'Cats and Dogs' was released and Ms Garofalo has completed 39! She has never been allowed to appear particularly appealing onscreen, however; after an apprenticeship on "Saturday Night Live" she broke onto the movies as the Date From Hell in "Bye Bye Love" and Winona Ryder's best friend in “Reality Bites." Janeane Garofalo stars as Abby, a veterinarian who has her own radio show. I found this movie to be very enjoyable, very well made and very thought provoking while still humorous. She also has the personal assistant, personal makeup and hair and even a personal acting coach! The only character that kept me watching here was Ben Chaplin's--now there is a person of substance, with enormous charisma and a beautiful presence. The movie has its laughs but they are actually rather subtle and infrequent. One day, a British-accented photographer named Brian (Ben Chaplin) calls up with a problem: he has an angry dog on roller skates ruining his studio. No I don't think they should have hired an UGLIER actress that is simply ridiculous, the film was not about an ugly woman but a beautiful woman who has fallen into the trap of "THINKING" she is unattractive! "The Truth About Cats & Dogs" is not simply another version of the old story, however. Ultimately, The Truth About Cats & Dogs happens for absolutely no reason at all; other than to perhaps shuffle onto screens a meek message-movie about looks, rational thinking, male presumption and so-forth which are all items that happen to have been dealt with before and in more engaging fashions. The truth about Cats and Dogs is one of my all time favorite movies. It also is somewhat difficult to believe that Garafolo a successful vet and talk show host should be that insecure about herself. Just like Susan Sarandon in Thelma and Louise or later on the same chemistry that Glenn Close and Rose Byrne had in the TV show Damages. I have to admit I am impressed by the folks who continue to say they felt JG was too pretty to be Abby and that it just didn't ring true to them because of that fact. Funny and intelligent, despite some flaws. 10? I wish more people knew how wonderful it really is... "The Truth About Cats and Dogs" may be a charming and (rare these days) profanity free comedy, but it reveals some unpleasant truths about Hollywood and maybe American society as a whole. Because in the real world, women who look like Janeane Garofalo ARE considered less attractive than tall, skinny blondes. 1:00. The Truth About Cats & Dogs is very funny around the edges... but as the characters begin to hang out together, forming a platonic menage a trois, the mistaken-identity ruse never escalates into true screwball lunacy. The truth about Cats and Dogs is one of my all time favorite movies. It's been on my DVR for 4 years and I watch it once a month roughly. The Truth About Cats & Dogs book. "The Truth About Cats & Dogs" is one of those warm-hearted, quick-footed comedies that's light as a feather, fueled by coincidence, and depends above all on the luminosity of its performers. And I was hoping it would be more than such, especially because it had Janeane Garofalo on the cast list. The movie is based upon the presumption that Garofalo is not pretty, and of course she is. She agrees to meet him. It remains one of the movies that, whenever I'm running through my library of films and my finger comes across it, I have to take it out and watch again. Insecure about her looks, the petite brunette describes herself as a tall blonde, and when her admirer appears at the radio station, he is introduced to Uma Thurman, a tall blonde, who agrees to trade places with Garofolo. If you want a laugh a minute movie look elsewhere. One of the previous reviewers wrote: "It's Cyrano de Bergerac on the surface but more of a sitcom in its substance," and even that's a stretch. As some of the other reviews have mentioned, it's rather simple in its telling and the outcome is obvious from the onset. I first watched The Truth About Cats and Dogs, many years ago when it was first released on VHS. In contrast, Uma Thurman looks a lot less attractive than usual and she's portrayed as the 'hot' one. It has been remade countless times; Jose Ferrer won an Oscar as Cyrano in 1950, Steve Martin updated the story in "Roxanne" (1987), and Gerard Depardieu got an Oscar nomination for best actor for his version in 1990. 1:05. Yes, I winced. The message of this movie is "personality is more important than beauty". Instead of clearing things up right away, … The story of Cyrano was first told in the 17th century, and was made into an enduring play by Edmond Rostand in 1897. In 1975, he won the Pulitzer Prize for distinguished criticism. A hilarious case of mistaken Identity? One is concerned about a cat, which won't stop licking its owner's face. Of course all movies like this toy a little with the odds. Watch the movie again folks, you'll see what I mean. Katya lesson 1- The Truth about Moms and Dads & Cats and Dogs . If there were ever any doubts as to the acting ability of Ms Garofalo this film will put them to rest. The three leads are all perfectly cast, with Janeane Garofalo doing an absolutely excellent job as the radio show vet whose self-conscious about her image. "Why," she asks, "would I meet a listener I know nothing about except that he puts roller skates on his dog?" Coming in as a little more than mere kitty litter, but rather far from being top dog; Lehmann's film about male perception of women is a wavering effort. Joel Film and TV, Reviews. Is The Truth About Cats & Dogs any good? Watch The Truth About Cats & Dogs Full Movie. How many plots are there supposed to be? Dr. Abby Barnes has a successful career as a veterinarian, but she is unlucky at love and upset about her lack of beauty. Well, she looked like she lost all of them and she was charming if you ask me (perhaps, it is solidarity of another 5'0 brunette ) but when she developed a relationship over the phone with one of the callers, she tells him that she is 5'10" statuesque blonde who is hard to miss. No, truth takes a back seat in this "family' film.". This movie demonstrates the great joys of friendship and love. One male caller is so taken with her voice and personality that he asks her for a physical description and a meeting. It may sound like cliché, and the film has several holes in the plot but is very enjoyable thanks to wonderful performance by Janeane and to these words: Without a doubt, my favorite play ever written is CYRANO DE BERGERAC, by Edmund Rostand. Their chemistry needs to be seen to be believed and it makes the movie a fun and enjoyable experience. As Abby Barnes, a talk-radio veterinarian who gives advice to the owners of neurotic pets, Garofalo transcends the mechanics of the script (by Audrey Wells) and creates a fully alive woman who first dismisses, and then is tickled by, the idea that she could be desirable. The Garofolo character is supposed to impress as a woman of substance, but really, she is so undeveloped as a person such that the substance falls by the wayside. "The Truth?" Abby longs to be Noelle, feeling that only then can she find true love. Janeane steals the show (again)! If these people were in their teen years it may have been more convincing. BEN CHAPLIN is a handsome man who is fooled into thinking that the radio personality he's impressed by is really her blonde neighbor (UMA THURMAN), enough so that he falls in love with Thurman until he finds out the two women have been playing a deceptive trick on him. My favorite scene in the movie is where Brian has made the list that "Abby" Nowell has asked for and goes to "Donna's" Abby's apartment to read it to her. According to The Truth About Pet Cancer, a seven-part docu-series, 1 in 1.65 dogs will get cancer and 1 in 3 cats—a startling statistic and the rate is rising. This seemed too high to me, so I googled it and WebMD, in a 2012 article stated that half of all dogs that live past the age of ten will get cancer. This statistic certainly fits my experience with my last few dogs. There's a lot to like in THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS but I find the basic premise completely unbelievable. Almost on par with Thelma and Louise on that level. Well I'm here to tell you folks that this movie is closer to the truth than you realize. Metacritic Reviews. Janeane Garofalo whose work I loved on the great Larry Sanders Show as an insecure radio host who asks the very beautiful, confident Uma Thurman (who was amazing in Pulp Fiction of course) to take her identity to please a listener who is attracted to Garafolo by the radio? Ratings, review and more on Cinafilm.com It's the kind of surrealistic image that blindsides you; beyond language, beyond logic, it's intrinsically funny. A modern retelling of the Cyrano de Bergerac tale, except the genders are reversed. Ben Chaplin is quite alright and fortunately he doesn't do the American accent. The site's consensus states: "Sharp, witty, and charming, The Truth About Cats & Dogs features a standout performance from Janeane Garofalo." But Abby Garofalo is very likable. A photographer named Brian, calls … When Brian calls for her at the radio station, Abby in desperation begs Noelle to go out with him -- to pretend to be her. Now here is Janeane Garofalo in a gender switch for the story, which plays just as well, because who cannot identify with it? She says she is 5'10" and blonde because she's painfully insecure about her looks. They're just not my kind to be honest. On the one hand I can understand why Jeanine Garofalo is cast as the 'ugly' girl (she looks far from ugly) but, in my humble opinion, she's not portrayed as an 'ugly' girl but rather as a woman who thinks of herself as unattractive. However, it's a story so full of … Another has depressed fish. If Garofolo's character had showed more vulnerability, real vulnerability in a mature skin, it may have won me over. I first watched The Truth About Cats and Dogs, many years ago when it was first released on VHS. I kept waiting for the guy to let on that he knew what was going on; that would have been slightly more believable, and may have elevated this to the status of "charming" romantic comedy that so many have found it. Those two are just so much fun to watch together. Nonetheless the movie does work and it is worth seeing for the performances. The film received positive reviews from critics. There are scenes in which she is positively luminescent as the 'voice on the radio' – Dr Abby Barnes. The Truth About Cats & Dogs (2/3) Movie CLIP - I Love You Because... (1996) HD. This really is an outstanding film – the scenes with 'Hank' steal the show and the late-night telephone conversation between Abby and Brian should not to be missed. THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS is a modern day CYRANO DE BEGERAC with a Generation X protagonist. Sharp, witty, and charming, The Truth About Cats and Dogs features a standout performance from Janeane Garofalo. The dog is a pretty good skater, but it has understandably grown disturbed, and won't let anyone near it. Full Review Rob Gonsalves eFilmCritic.com But hey, it isn't I LOVE TROUBLE, either. Rating: BRINGING UP BABY it's not. The truth is...this is a very good rom-com! Abby successfully gets the skates off Hank (the dogs eventual name) over the phone and Brian is quite impressed and asks Abby out. People can tell me it's sentimental and mawkish, but I don't care; I absolutely love it. If you want a low-key comedy with great acting than this will get the job done just fine. To an extent 'Lehman' does succeed in showing the stereotypical beauty that's created by the media (Thurman's character) and what would be considered as less attractive (Garofalo's character). | Janeane Garofalo plays Dr. Abby Barnes, the "Truth About Cats and Dogs" radio question-and-answer show host who unwittingly entices a listener over the radio with her soothing voice and personality. By making the "ugly girl" beautiful, and the "hot chick" unattractive, it creates an irony which forces the audience to look at how they view women in the real world. How the skates got on is never addressed. 33:46. | The story is derivative: Basically it is the Cyrano story; however, it is given new life and freshness by the appealing characters and plot twists. One day Brian calls her and needs help getting his dog out of the rollerskates on his paws. Here we see an entire other side to her personality; a smartness, a penetrating wit, that takes this old story and adds a wry spin to its combination of romance, sweetness and hope. It includes a lot of humor that is generated by its specific situation. Possibly some of the best co-star chemistry I have seen between two women. She knows such a person: Noelle (Uma Thurman), her neighbor, whose romantic life is crumbling (Noelle has a bully for a boyfriend, who thinks nothing of breaking the bow of Abby's violin over his knee). Her show, "The Truth About Cats and Dogs", has made her a household voice, but, as is often true for radio personalities, her face is less familiar. Brian, a photographer, calls into Abby's show and later, to her … This is what a RC should be...very enjoyable and not overstuffed with cliches. Or maybe it's just because you're not allowed to be a movie star if you're ugly, so they couldn't find anyone else. Janeane Garofolo plays a veterinarian who dispenses advice about pets on a radio talk show. In this comprehensive Bravecto® review, we’ll address all the above questions and more to show you the unbiased truth about this flea and tick treatment and help you determine whether Bravecto® is safe, and if it is really the best choice for your four-legged family member. The message of this film is that the beauty within is more important than physical attractiveness, but the other unintended message is that physical beauty is not in the eye of the beholder but determined by how closely one resembles the seemingly bulimic fashion models plastered on magazine covers. Much of it does indeed have to do with cats and dogs (and with a convincing demonstration of how to get a tortoise to stick its head out of its shell). While most of the differences between dogs and cats are obvious, Marc Morrone points out some fascinating distinctions. Love many of the classics like 'Sabrina'. I checked out this movie because the premise sounded hilarious. Roger Ebert was the film critic of the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013. In a nutshell, it's a average film that could have been better. Truth Must Be Told: I like this romantic comedy that echoes "Syrano de Bergerac". Her callers have the sorts of problems I suspect all pet owners secretly have. Read full review My VCR tape broke, my DVD got scratched. Garofalo plays Abby, a veterinarian who gives advice to pet owners over a talk radio station in Santa Monica, Calif. This is a lovely, funny and well done romantic comedy. This comedy/romance has caught my eye and as well as my heart. Garofolo, who at one point in the film is called "ugly," is, in fact, the woman with the most appeal, physically and in terms of personality. In both roles she was blunt, abrasive and took no hostages -- although she was more likable in the second. He asks how he will recognize her. She is far from ugly and really should be playing the romantic characters more often. There is a poignance in her situation, because she loves Brian, too, in her way, and handles a difficult situation with unexpected sweetness. Cats and Dogs has a central theme of how women are judged on their looks and this movie is made much better then a movie like say Shallow Hal although the issue there was more oriented toward weight. "The Truth About Cats & Dogs," a comic triangle that includes one smart, jokey DJ, a goofy, practically anorexic model and a precious hunk of a Brit, is a pleasant, unassuming exercise in geometry. In Uma Thurman's hands, she does not simply become a pawn, a false front for Abby. As Abby dispenses advice about roller-skating dogs, Brian finds himself strangely attracted to her voice -- to its intelligence and tone, and to a quality that calls out to some need within him. I must admit that I am a bit tired of Janeane Garofalo playing the 'ugly' girl roles. FAQ BRINGING UP BABY it's not. Rated PG-13 If it doesn't irk you when a plot hinges on inexplicable errors made by supposedly intelligent characters, then you may not be annoyed by 'The Truth About Cats and Dogs,' a romantic comedy starring Janeane Garofalo as Abby, a supposedly intelligent, supposedly insightful, and supposedly unattractive veterinarian who hosts a radio call-in show. 2:35. There's the fantasy dream in this movie. 10/10. At least not when she is with Brian, and pretending to be Abby. It includes a lot of humor that is generated by its specific situation. Thurman is a bag of bones and, to my eyes, not at all attractive. Directed by Michael Lehmann. It has an 85% "fresh" rating at Rotten Tomatoes from 47 reviews. The Truth About Cats and Dogs Review by Andrew Hicks (noraruth AT aol DOT com) May 23rd, 1996 THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS & DOGS A film review by Andrew Hicks "You can love your pets -- you just can't 'love' your pets.". The scene makes me cry every time, " you didn't say I love her because she is so beautiful, that is not why I love her, I mean yes she is beautiful." Awards Her on screen personality here does not differ much from her other roles but she succeeds in what she set out to do. I see a lot of comments on here that say how Janeane Garofalo is actually more attractive in this movie than Uma Thurman. Review: The Truth About Cats and Dogs. This film is really sweet, even more so if you are an animal lover. Oh, cut it with the sledgehammer of a "message", that doesn't even work here. Buzz60. Unfortunately, I think the movie failed in that it actually used someone who was cute and pretty and made her off to be an ugly duckling. Anyway, here's one of them in a basic form, the old surrogate lover ploy. She is a cultured, educated woman, who is smart, has a good sense of humor and makes a great living. WHAT WE DESIRE — Mel (Melonie Diaz) and Maggie (Sarah Jeffery) attempt to find a missing Macy (Madeleine Mantock) with a spell while Harry (Rupert Evans) uses a different method — allowing Abigael (Poppy Drayton) to help him access his subconscious in an attempt to connect with his dark side. I would have enjoyed 'The Truth About Cats & Dogs' a lot more if there was a little more comedy to it. The Australian Classification website comprises information for general public and industry about the classification of films, games and publications. He asks Abby to meet him. | Blu-ray & DVD: The Truth About Cats and Dogs (1996) A floppy-haired British love interest? Now comes this movie, which is inspired by it(as I understand it, writer Audrey Wells is a big fan as well) rather than being an outright remake of it, but it's still quite good. This ain't about her shape or size or face. I've seen, I think, most, if not every, movie which has been inspired by it, from the 1950 version by Jose Ferrer(the movie is stagy and changes the play, but he's wonderful), to ROXANNE in 1987, Steve Martin's wonderful re-working of the play as romantic comedy, and best of all, the 1990 version starring Gerard Depardieu(how appropriate France's greatest actor should appear in it giving his best performance). Garofalo plays Abby Barnes, the host of a radio call-in show for pet lovers, The Truth About Cats and Dogs. The Truth About Cats and Dogs is the hot date movie of the spring, and Garofalo can take a bow for that. Perhaps a little editing would have helped. What really makes "The Truth About Cats & Dogs" special in places... is Garofalo's dry, self-effacing wit and Thurman's ditzy, old-style Hollywood glamour. Good watch, could watch again, and can recommend. RPDR LIVE. The truth about cats & dogs (Trailer) Moviepilot. The dog has to be one of the cutest I have seen in a film- probably because he is a real dog rather than the little dogs that many comedies seem to favor. Where the movie does work however and why I enjoyed it is purely because of Garafalo and Thurman's chemistry. But there is something in his voice, maybe in his British accent, that appeals to a need in her, and God knows she's needy, since her social life is in disrepair. The way I see it, this is deliberate (which should be evident by the fact that this is the only movie where Uma is not what I would call attractive, and her attractiveness in this movie is a big deal). It is fairly obvious that by the end of The Truth about Cats and Dogs, Abby Barnes (Janeane Garofalo) is more beautiful, both internally and externally, than Noelle (Uma Thurman). Sure she doesnt have Thurman's beauty but she is beautiful enough on her own level and I feel she could have had complete confidence in herself as a beautiful successful woman.
